More

“More,” essentially, is the addition to something, whether it is in substance, quantity, measurement, volume, emotion, degree, etc. You can see more, pretend more, imagine more, believe more and probably, most importantly, to the student of meditation, you could love more.

The student spoke with the teacher, “Teacher, I find myself struggling to understand a parable from ancient text. The story is of a father with two sons who left their father’s side to venture out into the world. One son found worldly success and an awareness of conscious presence; while the other squandered his time and wealth, falling into anguish and suffering. If I understand, when the second son returned his father loved him more.” The teacher lovingly replied, “Yes, it appears we do not choose suffering. That said, the majority of our fellow humans are driven by programmed, obsessive, compulsive thinking, like you and I are at times. Thinking that comes to mind and moves us in a certain direction or mindset which may lead to behaviors that interfere with the quality of our lives as well as those around us. It may appear humans are choosing the negative things they do. It appears their actions are purposeful, and in their control. They are asleep. Conscience presence is not in the forefront of their lives. We are all doing it… acting out. Some behaviors are accepted by some while at the same moment intolerable to others. Condemnation is not the cure for the woes in the world. Love is.  Not surrender, not vulnerability, not blind acceptance. Love. The father loved his son more because that’s what he needed.” The student replied, “I shall love them more.”

A meditation, try this on purpose, with intention; or don’t. Keep in mind, when you think of planning to put time aside for meditation you can do it now. Little or lengthy moments here and there to use meditation practices to bring you present. That said, a “love” meditation would consist of telling yourself you love you, once or a thousand times. Focus your attention on the reaction in your mind and body to the practice. Then tell yourself you love those beings and the situations around you. For instance I love so-and-so or I love this thing and that thing. Even those things you despise. You’re not changing your disgust or disappointment for a person or happening, you’re adding love and observing the results.

Embrace

“Embrace” has several meanings; the first, of course, is to hold, cuddle, clutch or hug someone or something lovingly or affectionately in your arms. You can also embrace something in your heart or mind, as with taking on an idea or an affection with your thoughts and emotions. As in “I embrace this moment fully,” to say I accept and love all the content the moment contains. We embrace many things, cultures, habits, ideals, theologies, situations, change, each other… The word holds what we think of as positive connotations. A deeper hidden meaning which includes thoughts and an awareness of feelings of love and acceptance. In most cases, it implies a state of present-moment activity, meaning when we embrace something it is more than likely happening in the now. We can say “we embraced that in the past,” or “I can’t wait to embrace them in the future;” yet, more often than not, we embrace things in the moment. It is these such moments that become the object of observation for the student of meditation.

The student sat with the teacher focusing on what they considered a road block on their journey to conscious awareness. The student said “Teacher, I find myself in the midst of many a conflict as I observe and digest the goings on around me. When it rains, I watch for the sun. I constantly desire things I don’t have while I am overwhelmed with abundance. I look for behaviors in people, society, or the world, which these things do not possess. And in my searching, my looking, my desire, I miss the splendor, wonder and joy the moments hold.” The teacher looked lovingly upon the student with compassion and understanding of their plight, and replied “Yes, desire, want, and longing have their place. Most often, a place in need of observation and understanding. These thoughts and their accompanying emotions are often a trap of the conditioned mind. I’m here, yet preoccupied by a desire to be there, like standing in the midst of a beautiful forest, yet wanting and longing to be at the beach. As a student and a teacher we learn to embrace the moment. Acknowledging the thought stream as it whirls by with its distractive thinking while we bring our attention to that and even who that is before us in the present moment. Focus attention on the moment; lovingly embrace what it contains. Even the things we may label as negative are much better handled when we accept them for what they are. Embracing the moment when our lives truly unfold is an important step on our road to conscious aware presence.” 

A meditation, try it out here and there when and if it comes to mind, or do not. Start off with a present moment meditation (acknowledge each thing and happening as you become aware of it). For instance, I heard an animal making a noise, I just thought of a friend, I feel my feet, I heard a sound, saw something move, etc.  Then, or simultaneously, bring your thoughts to embracing the moment and all it contains. Don’t merely observe, but purposely embrace everything going on around you. Be aware if desire steps in, observe that, then return your focus to lovingly embracing all the moment has to offer.

ALLOWING CHANGE

Change defined is causing or making something to become different, having an effect on the future unfolding of a moment or event. Change or changing often refers to something becoming different than it was before. We’re all responsible for some change. Some change we do purposefully in order to accomplish a goal or to make something happen. You’ve done it. You’ve changed this to make that happen, or you’ve changed that to make this happen. Through meditation practices, change comes effortlessly and through that change we move towards a life of conscious awareness. Love, peace and joy come to the forefront of our lives. We stress less and relax more. Those around us are aware of the change, drawn towards it, and shared consciousness is achieved.

The student of meditation becomes aware of change in themselves as they continue their studies. Some of the change occurs as they allow learned, repetitive, compulsive, perceived negative thoughts to flow through their minds with conscious awareness. Aware of the thought, aware of its impact on their minds and body and aware of their conscious present being watching it all unfold. Consciously present, unaffected by the workings of their minds. Allowing, causing and having an effect on their lives. Change! Changing from a mindset of random or consistent compulsive thinking that interferes with the quality of life.

Some teach that meditation practices allow space in your mind for change to happen. The teacher said “when you meditate,” focused attention on an object or happening while you non-judgmentally observe the thoughts going through your mind and returning your focus when and if you have been pulled into the stream of thought, “over a short time or lifetime your mind quiets, allowing your mind to process thoughts undisturbed and setting the stage for change.”

A meditation for change, try it out here and there or do not. During meditation or awareness of presence (meditation leads to a state of conscious presence), bring your awareness to the sensation in your mind and body as you let go of a thought by bringing your focus back to your object of meditation. Try it also when you bring your awareness to moments your mind is in the past or future. Observe the change in the moment. An example would be allowing the passing of what you may define as a negative thought. Some call it relief, freedom, the end of suffering; some refer to it as a moment of conscious present awareness, which always leads to change.

CAN’T (CANNOT)

“Can’t” or “cannot” refers to the inability or lack of permission/allowance to do something or accomplish a goal or fulfill a plan or request. Interestingly, “can” means the mentality, permission, ability, etc. to allow or cause something to happen. The word “not” is used to bring negativity or limitations to a word or group of words that proceed or follow other words in a sentence. For instance, “I cannot quiet the repetitive thinking going on in my mind,” or “you will do it or not.” “Not” can also be thought of as a word to put a negative flip on another word’s meaning, as in the word “cannot.”  Can:  positive. Not:  negative. The student of meditation brings their awareness of the limiting and negative connotations of the word-pairing, can and not. You hear it often; perhaps you have your own list of “cans” and “cannots.” “I can eat this; I can’t eat that. I can understand this, but not that. I can accomplish this, yet cannot accomplish that.” Upon observation we can see how the two words conflict.  The student of meditation is aware when the use and application of “can’t” limits their progress.

The teacher explained, “The mind believes many of the things you tell it. Say to yourself ‘I like this’ or ‘I like that’ and you will convince yourself it is true. Often times without experiencing such likes to be sure. On the other hand, tell yourself you can’t do this or you can’t do that and your mind will believe it. That thinking will often stifle your progress and often cause you to stay in the same state you were in prior to your affirmation.” The student pondered the lesson. Aware of the multitude of moments the words “I can’t” came from their mouth and thinking. Self-awareness, waking up, conscious presence, includes the acknowledgement of our own words holding us back from the progress we make.

A meditation, try it out here and there when you catch the moment, or not. When you hear yourself saying “I can’t” or “cannot” or hear it from others, focus your attention on the moment and change the words to “I could,” “maybe,” it’s possible,” etc. then bring your attention to the difference in how you digest the thoughts of the moment. For instance, “I can’t practice meditation, my mind won’t let me” to “I could try some meditation and see what happens.” Aware when you tell yourself something you can’t do compared to how you feel and respond when you open yourself up to the possibility of a different outcome.

BEING

Being is an interesting word to define. Some refer to it as our true self; that part of us which is there before and after the words we use to define ourselves. Others, such as some theologians, define it as everything that is in existence, as when viewing all that is, all that has been and all that is to come as one. Some describe consciousness as being; as if consciousness is some unidentifiable word that merely points to that which is beyond comprehension. As a verb you may think of being as something that came or that comes into existence. For instance, the current social global movement towards awareness and consciousness came into being centuries ago.

For the student of meditation the word being comes into play as one searches for self-definition. There is a lot of talk these days about how we identify ourselves and each other, and how a majority of people want to be identified. Call me this, don’t call me that… it appears the conflict may be ego motivated or a search for individuals to find their place in the world, an that’s ok or it’s not. Even to call another human can stir up a controversy if the subject doesn’t identify as such.

Being may become the identifying word of choice. It describes no gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, citizenship, alien or human, etc. It covers it. It is how many a conscious being have been describing themselves for centuries. Being describes that which is capable of existing, something that exists and the whole existence of things. The word pretty much covers everything.

The student asked the teacher, “in this day and age, with all the identification issues around, how would you best describe yourself?” The teacher gently replied, “I am a being subject to the identification of those around me, those who define me as they do others from the confines of their conditioned minds. It would be easier to tell you what I am not for the word being merely points to the unlimited possibilities of what I and you truly are. I can give you words that my being includes:  I am love, I am part of the natural unfolding of all that is, I am consciousness realized. I am one with you and all that is, present in this moment, which includes this moment, the past and the future as one indescribable existence, now.”

A meditation, try it out here and there, when you remember or the subject comes to mind, or not. Listen to how people, groups, organizations and you yourself describe themselves and you. Then apply your knowledge of being to the observation, be aware how the description changes or appears when viewing it from an awareness of being.

ANSWERS

“Answer” is the reaction or resulting information provided or acquired to a question, situation or a statement. The end result of the acquisition of knowledge. For the student of meditation it is the end result of questions (answers) that become the focus of their observation.

You have heard it, said it, desired it… Seems we share this behavior, not only individually but as groups, governments, organizations, teachers, students etc.; we want an answer. We want, need, demand, expect, look for, like to get an answer and so on.  Sometimes we accept it; often, as students, we question the answer, usually for good reason or to gain more knowledge. We are given the wrong answers, the true answer, the manipulative answers and, of course, the loving ones, as well as many other answers.

The student of observation (through meditation) brings something else to the answers that are given or displayed before them. They add an awareness of the limitations of the answers the people of the world are providing, as to who and what we are, “why we are here” as many say, and what’s really going on in the midst of this thing we call creation or all that is.

The stranger approached the teacher and said “who and what are you?” The teacher said “to the best of my awareness, a human being.” “Well, that’s not an answer, what do you do? What is your name? Where are you from? What is your religion?” Lovingly, the teacher responded, “like you, the people of the world, societies, and families and friends, have defined us by tangible observation, which is subject to change. Everything you ask of me to identify myself are more or less things which are all subject to change. You may identify me by your list, but human being answers your questions best, leaving an awareness of unlimited possibilities of what you and I truly are. Namaste”.

A meditation, try it out here and there, when and if it comes to your mind or not.  You can, of course, practice meditation purposefully with intention or without intention. Bring your awareness to moments you answer something or when something is answered for you. Be aware if judgements or mental fantasies arise. It’s okay. Just acknowledge them and continue. Bring your attention to whether the answer limits your thinking of that of the listener. For instance, “the universe is big” compared to “the universe consists of billions and billions of galaxies and its’ very existence appears to be beyond (appears to be) human comprehension and that’s okay.” One answer limits, one answer opens us to limitless understanding, including our awareness of our presence and consciousness in the existence of all that is.

QUESTIONS

“Question” defined is a group of words formed together to gain information or answers. We question for many reasons; to gain knowledge, to validate a statement or situation, to seek truth and understanding. Questioning is an apparent essential to further the development of humankind. Most often a positive act but sometimes considered a negative. Positive, for instance, if it results in the betterment of a situation or humanity. Deemed negative, if the questioning is used to belittle someone or damage, manipulate, lie, etc.

Many people have little to question, either due to the fact that they have great knowledge or they do not want to appear unintelligent. Situations or thinking which prevent questioning can be stifling. Be aware when you do not question because you think you have all the answers. This behavior can bring an end to knowledge and wisdom. Of course, don’t hold back because you don’t want to appear “stupid” as some say. This behavior stunts growth in personal education as well as human and spiritual growth, if that’s where you’re headed.

We question to “get the facts,” call out a false truth, to learn, educate, find solutions; sometime to insult and tease, to test loyalty, etc. The student of meditation is aware of when they themselves question.  The pupil adds something, an observation on the very behavior itself.

The students sat in the grass quietly listening to the lesson of the day. One asked of another “why does the teacher take such a round-about way to get to the point.” Distracted by their own question the student became preoccupied with mental thoughts and lost focus on the content of the teachings. As class ended many students approached the instructor with thankfulness and bowed heads, rejoicing over the guidance and knowledge received. Bewildered, the questioning student asked their friend “What did I miss?” Their friend replied, “There are times for questions and times for silent observation. Learn that and you haven’t missed anything”.  The student responded, “Nameste.”

A meditation, try it out here and there, when it comes to mind, or not. Focus your attention as you would when meditating. Bring to mind something you have questioned or do question. For a moment observe how things may have gone if you had simply observed, then be present as your mind answers that thought on its own. Be aware if you get pulled into a bunch of thinking or mental movies while you’re practicing this meditation. Return to the object of focus when necessary and start the meditation again. Practices such as these can be challenging, especially when you’re allowing yourself to think on something while being aware of the pull of obsessive thinking. You can do it.
